I have a Semesterticket? Does this count as a Deutschlandticket

If you are enrolled at a university across Germany, you will receive a Semesterticket as part of your university fees. This is normally valid in the Bundesland where your university is located. However, at most universities this has been upgraded to a ticket for the whole of Germany. Please check with your individual university.

Additionally, some universities have special arrangements with neighbouring cities in other countries. For example: if you are a student in Aachen, you are able to travel to Masstricht/Valkenburg with the Semesterticket.

Which countries can I travel to for FREE with the ticket?

There are certain destinations which you can travel to with the Deutschlandticket, without an extra cost:

Luxembourg

With the RE11, you can travel directly from Koblenz to Luxembourg. Simply board the train in Koblenz and stay on the train at Trier to cross the border into Luxembourg. Please note that there may be border checks on the train, so please bring a passport with you or ID card.

A great time of year to visit Luxembourg is during the winter season- you won’t only find one, but five Christmas markets across the city.

Venlo- Netherlands

Venlo is known as one of the most cycling-friendly cities in the Netherlands and is known for its harbour area, as well as the beautiful marketplace with brightly coloured architecture. On weekends, you can expect to come across markets along the street. To learn more about the history and culture of the city- don’t miss out on the Jocus Museum.

Personally, I really enjoyed walking around Venlo and soaking in the atmosphere of the harbour and the shopping streets. It’s a popular destination for German residents who like to go shopping on Sundays.

Arrival: From Düsseldorf you can travel directly to Venlo using the RE13. Venlo is also a great connecting station for those wanting to visit other cities in the Netherlands.

Arnhem- Netherlands

Arnhem is located around the corner from Nijmegen and is near the border with Germany. The cities offers a wide range of cultural activities, such as a glass elevator inside a church, shopping streets, a functioning windmill and a beautiful nature reserve.

Arrival: You can arrive to Arnhem via direct train from Düsseldorf – the RE19 is a direct connection and takes around 1,5 hours.

Salzburg- Austria

If you’re based around or visiting Munich, then Salzburg is the perfect day trip- and you can travel here with the Deutschlandticket. Salzburg is rich in history and the birthplace of Mozart and it’s the perfect city for both summer and winter visits.

Arrival: BRB RE5 from Munich HBF to Salzburg HBF

Tip: When in Salzburg , don’t miss out on From Julia for the best pastries and the sunset views from the Mönchsberg lookout point- from here you can enjoy the most amazing views onto the castle!

Furthermore, you can travel to Nijmegen in the Netherlands and Basel in Switzerland with the ticket. Please note: the ticket is not valid to the French city Strasbourg or to cities in Belgium, however you can secure cheap travel to Belgium via Aachen.
